about

Danny McGaw Lawrence, Kansas

I was a footballer, then I was a street musician, then I was a bar musician and now I’m in two Indi rock bands. I was a crazy kid and now I’m a crazy father. I have made 10 records in 14 years and kept a musical diary the whole time. These days I try to record most of my songs in my home studio.

I have started a blog to share these recordings and to raise funds for the next record.

Track Name: Mystery Parade
I stumbled out, into a mystery parade
I had my doubts, the sky was full of rain
Left my coat, umbrella by the door
Across the doorstep

Clowns were there, drunk and exited
The marching band, was undecided
So I cut down a side street on my own
The sun faded. the streets were overgrown
With pimps and hustlers and abandoned veterans
And kids looking for something

Found the river, it was early mornin'
Spring had sprung into a flash of colour
There was no money, fleeting friends
Just a stubborn fool, with a song stuck in my head
Yes I cried, yes i bled
Yes I died alone in my head
For some reason, I could not go home
Thought I was losing, turns out I was just wrong

I stumbled out, to a mystery parade
I had my doubts
But I could not look away

We were just kids
Track Name: Sleepin' on a Train
Never knew I was sleepin on a train
Never knew I was sleepin on a train

No one here leaves till the morning
Keep your head down your mouth shut
Take your medicine

Check your soul at the coat closet
Let it go like a credit card bill
Aint nothin wrong with some good old fashioned livin
Take what you want
Keep it for yourself

Never knew I was sleepin on a train
Never knew I was sleepin on a train
Track Name: I AM The Lucky One
She makes her living
Solving other peoples problems
A modern day jesus
Helping the weak and the vulnerable

Me I am the lucky one
The great pretender
Stuck in neutral
Cant find my phone as usual

I am the lucky one
Landed on my feet
I am the lucky one
Yeah shes so good to me

Shes from a little town
In central Kansas
Raised by good people with college educations
And government connections

Me Im just a northern boy
Of the nineteen nineties
Man United, Stone Roses and Oasis
We go together
Like the sun and the moon
We go together
There was nothing we could do

Played so many roles in this production
I dont know if Im directing or clearing the stage
She is my lover, my pillar
My confidant, my sage

I am the lucky one
Landed on my feet
I am the lucky one
Yeah shes so good to me
Track Name: Hey Lie
Hey lie, hey lie
Wont you come home
The fires burnin
The kettles on
The kids are windin down
Another day is done
Hey lie, hey lie
Wont you come home

Talking of leaving
Lookin at the road again
Always comes so quick
Once you let the light in
Mama we have grown
Aint no goin back again
Mama we have grown

We moved to Boston
Carolina too
Running from the west coast
Just a couple of washed up fools
Mama we have grown
Aint nothin more true
Mama we have grown

We take the first train
Babe the waitings done
Now or never
The time has come
Mama we have grown
The river has run
Mama we have grown

Hey lie, hey lie
Wont you come home
The fires burnin
The kettles on
The kids are windin down
Another day is done
Hey lie, hey lie
Wont you come home
Track Name: Nothing Left To Celebrate
Stayed until there was nothing left to celebrate
All the sausage rolls were gone
An endless conversation with a faceless candidate
Then I stumbled on

The girls were so pretty
The boys were so sophisticated
Looked though me like I was straight from the slums
And ask me questions they know I dont have the answers to
Then they stumble on

To their remarkable house that their parents gave them
Remarkable friends and remarkable tea
Play their pianos and they speak their second languages
And talk about the human disease

From a place just above
A room with a view
A life beyond survival

Stayed until there was nothing left to celebrate
Then I stumbled on

He said I can help you if you wanna die tonight
You aint the only one here whos sick and tired
Me and the boys are goin out
Gonna have a lyin, competition
I can see by that look in your eyes
You aint no place to hide
Youre comin with me son
Youre comin with me son

Stayed until there was nothing left to celebrate
Then I stumbled on
Track Name: Bury This Ghost
Mean little man with the aging frown
Spending his days looking down
Cursing his fate with the peasants and the scroungers
Longing for the one that got away

How they used to go to town, burn that city down
Cheap booze, and loose women
The kids would hang around, till the money was all gone
Then they turned their backs and walked away

That was high school then, in the scrap book bin
Glory days, long since over
Never quite did find something to believe in
Caught waiting for life to begin

Said I should be someone, I could be on tv
If it wasn't for my bum knee and my drug addiction
I curse every dollar I make with my hands
It should've been me who got away

I heard he's changed, I heard he's gone all LA
Cut his hair, stopped eating bread
Powder for his nose and yoga in the mornin
Drinks whiskey seven instead

Forgot all about, the brick and the stone
The lyin and the stealin that we have to deal with
Forgot all about the ground that grew him
The reason he got away

Alone at night when I let my guard down
I have to say Ive been losin it
Never quite did find something to believe
Another reason to get out of bed

See I am someone, I dont like tv
Too old to be a hero and the drugs have stopped working
I need to find a way to be myself and pay the bills
This world aint too kind to the dreamers
Im goin out now, gonna bury this ghost
Im goin out now gonna make the most
Of every breath Im takin, gonna feeel every note
im goin out now gonna bury this ghost
Track Name: She's My Home
Theres no place that I'd rather be
In the rain with the thugs and the misery
Shes my home, always has been
And she always will be my home

She never loved me
I was never enough
Spent my days pretending
Callin' her bluff
Sick of being lonely
Sick of these walls
I wont lie for you anymore

Sick of being homesick
Sure it would pass
Sure it would fade
Free at last

Theres no place that I'd rather be
In the rain with the thugs and the misery
Shes my home, always has been
And she always will be my home
Track Name: Empty Streets
See how the future never comes
Look in the mirror damage done
No one left to lie to
No one left to blame
Every empty street sounds the same

See how the night becomes your friend
With you for the fight a strong right hand
Leave you in the mornin
Stranded like a fool
Holdin on to a fate thats yours to lose

Its alright baby
Im still here
Just a little broken
Scared by the years
Get to tomorrow
Check the weather then
Its alright baby
Its alright baby

Still just to heal, just to forget
War against the monsters in your head
No one left to lie to
No one left to blame
Every empty street sounds the same
Track Name: Sign Here
Ill see what I can do
Ill take it to the boss
If it was up to me
I'd give you the thing for free
You can take it or leave it
But its a big cold world full of strangers
With no friends
You're gonna need a friend

Sign here, sign here
Youre gonna need a friend

Take this book home with you
Write your name on the front page
Sit down listen carefully
I will tell you what to write
Dont listen to the haters
Dont listen to the hippies
Safely down the middle
I will watch your bed at night

Sign here, sign here
Youre gonna need a friend

Wear this tshirt
Wave this flag above your head
Learn to be proud
Let the separation grow

Running on empty
Overly medicated
Stumble through the mornin'
Till you get to the trough
All the animals will be there
Make you feel normal
Like youre not the only one

Sign here, sign here
Youre gonna need a friend
Track Name: Lost My Way
I could blame the whiskey
I could blame the road
Whatever the reason
Mama I lost my way

I'd get so angry
Keep it all inside
Death by poison
Snipers on the inside

Gotta let it through
To keep from drowning
Gotta let it through
To keep from standing still

Homeless
A child alone
Stubborn as my father

I could blame the whiskey
I could blame the road
Whatever the reason
Mama I lost my way
